Musixmatch has acquired Music Reports, the US music-rights data and administration company behind the Songdex copyright registry, in a deal that also brings the Blokur rights and licensing platform into Musixmatch. The companies announced the transaction on October 19, 2026; financial terms were not disclosed.
The acquisition is Musixmatch’s first, according to Music Business Worldwide. A law firm advising on the transaction, Ropes & Gray, also confirmed that the deal combines Musixmatch’s data and technology with Songdex and Blokur.
Why music-rights data matters
A digital recording and its underlying composition are different assets, and their ownership information may sit in separate databases. When recordings cannot be matched accurately to compositions and rightsholders, licensing can be delayed and royalties may be misallocated, held or missed.
Musixmatch says it plans to combine its music intelligence and metadata capabilities with Songdex’s registry and Blokur’s rights-matching technology. The intended result is a broader data layer linking recordings, compositions and rights information across the music ecosystem.
Implications for distributors and independent labels
For independent labels, publishers and distributors, better matching could make it easier to identify ownership conflicts and improve royalty administration. But an acquisition announcement is not proof that every catalogue will be matched correctly or that payment delays will disappear. Results will depend on data quality, integration, coverage and how services use the combined systems.
Rights holders should continue maintaining accurate ISRCs, ISWCs where available, writer and publisher splits, master ownership records, cue sheets and licensing documentation. Technology can help reconcile information, but it cannot reliably repair every missing or contradictory contract record without supporting evidence.
AI increases the pressure on rights infrastructure
AI-generated and AI-assisted music increases the volume and complexity of content that rights systems may need to identify. That makes reliable links between recordings, compositions and contributors more important, especially where a work is licensed for new uses or appears in audiovisual content.
What remains unknown
The parties have not disclosed the purchase price. The operational roadmap, integration timeline and specific service changes for existing Music Reports, Songdex and Blokur customers were not detailed in the announcements reviewed for this report.
